Health by the Numbers

Older Adults

  • Each year, more than 75% of Texans who pass away do so in a nursing home, which is 6 times more costly than community-based care
  • By the year 2040, those over 65 years of age will account for 27% of the population of Central Texas, compared to 11% in 2000

Behavioral Health

  • 74% of Texans have experienced some form of domestic violence or have a family member or friend who has experienced it
  • Behavioral health treatment reduces drug use by 40 - 60%, reduces crime by 40 - 60%, and increases employment prospects by 40%

Primary Care

  • 55 % of all emergency room visits in 2005, insured or uninsured, were found to be for diagnoses that are considered potentially preventable or “primary care treatable”
  • Texas currently has the 6th highest rate of adult obesity at about 25%, and 30% of Texas high-school students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight

  • Allows visitors to explore how metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. perform on a diverse range of social measures in the form of tables, thematic maps, and customizable reports. Multiple data sources have been used to show data for numerous domains such as housing opportunities, economic opportunities, residential integration, and health.

  • Allows user to query data on birth defects, birth, death, population, and major trauma by county for varying years. Must go to main website, click on category, then click on “by county.”

  • This site was created to provide basic demographic, quality and charge information on Texas hospitals and to promote consumer/hospital interaction.
